Revealed: The Pattern Project chairs I designed with DFS!

February 12, 2022
The Pattern Project Play chair DFS Emily Murray and Katie Woods @comedowntothewoods

The PLAY chair with me and Katie

OK so I think this might just be THE most exciting brand project I’ve worked on in the six years since The Pink House launched so please forgive me if I’m a little high pitched!

Because partnering up with DFS (the UK’s biggest sofa retailer and manufacturer no less) and my buddy Katie Woods (of @comedowntothewoods Insta-fame) to design a range of SIX (one for each year of The Pink House) patterned armchairs, named The Pattern Project, has been a collab made in interiors heaven.

The project kicked off in February 2020…what could possibly go wrong?!?!

Yep. Good old Covid stopped play - but only for a little while, as we were all determined to make The Pattern Project happen, global pandemic notwithstanding. When it came to choosing a theme for the range, Katie and I decided to draw on those feelings and emotions that have gotten us all through these very difficult times (we decided against a range of swear-word or gin-inspired designs…). And so we named the chairs CONNECT, HOPE, PLAY, KIND, DREAM and CALM, and set to work searching for inspiration for the patterns and working on colour schemes and cushion designs.

The result is a beautiful collection of chairs and matching cushions that I’m incredibly proud of. These are chairs that offer something for everyone, no matter your style, which room you’re furnishing, or how you want to feel when you sit in them. Unless you want to feel sad - we can’t help you with that!

When it comes to choosing your favourite, however, you might need a little help - after all each one is fabulous in its own right. The images in this blog post should help inform your decision (more pics below), but it would be madness to choose a chair without first ensuring it suits your personality…bring on the all-important quiz and do let me know your results…!

QUIZ: WHICH CHAIR BEST SUITS YOUR PERSONALITY?

The Pattern Project armchairs are infused with our passion for interiors that bring out your personality, but which chair is perfect for YOU? Take this clever quiz that looks deep inside your soul*, to discover your perfect pattern match…

*asks some fairly superficial questions

1) What song best sums you up?

A    I’ll Be There For You by The Rembrandts

B    Try A Little Tenderness by Otis Redding

C    Kids by Robbie Williams and Kylie Minogue

D    Here Comes The Sun by The Beatles

E    Pure Shores by All Saints

F     The Climb by Miley Cyrus

2) Describe your ideal birthday party:

A    In this amazing bar I discovered on Instagram, with loads of mates.

B    Treating my closest friends to champagne afternoon tea.

C    Massive ball pit party followed by trampolining!

D    Anything goes – whatever I do always turns out great.

E    Spa day.

F    I’m picturing a fabulous weekend away…

3) Oh no! Your car has broken down. How do you react?

A    WhatsApp my ‘Friend In Need’ group – there’s definitely going to be someone among my 30 mates who can help me.

B    I make sure that I’m not obstructing the road then call whoever I’m on my way to see – I hate letting anyone down.

C    I stick a large pink pom pom on top of my car and turn my party playlist up while I wait for assistance.

D    I rummage under the bonnet – I’m sure I can solve the problem!

E    I’m not in a hurry anyway – this just gives me a chance to enjoy my surroundings; ooh look at those lovely trees!

F    Oh I don’t drive – I prefer a hot air balloon.

4) If you HAD to choose a typographical print, what would it say?

A    The music sounds better with you

B    Work hard and be kind

C    Don’t grow up it’s a trap

D    Your future is what you do today

E    Power to the peaceful

F    Reach for the stars and you might end up with the moon.

5) What’s the first thing you do when you wake up?

A    Check my emails, texts, WhatsApps and DMs.

B    Call that friend who’s going through a tough time to check she’s OK.

C    Somersault out of bed.

D    Open the curtains and watch the sun rise.

E    Relax with a cup of coffee.

F     Go back to sleep!

6) What are your holiday plans?

A    A city break with mates I haven’t seen for ages (except for on Zoom).

B    I’m taking my mum on a girl’s weekend away – she deserves it.

C    Snowboarding! Apres ski dancing on tables! Repeat!

D    Anywhere hot and sunny.

E    A week by the sea.

F    Can’t decide – so many ideas!

"Fabulous family living!"

Emily Murray founder of The Pink House Living

"Hello! I’m Emily Murray, founder and editor of The Pink House. I’m a lifestyle journalist who has written and edited for loads of different publications, including Stylist, The Guardian, Grazia, Cosmopolitan, Conde Nast Traveller, Brides, and Mother & Baby. Here I am in the bricks-and-mortar Pink House in South East London, where I live with the Pink House Husband (PHH) and our two small, semi-feral boys. Our fabulous Christopher Farr sofa is covered in marker pen and chocolate, and the Eames rocker has a few suspicious stains. Come in and make yourself at home. No need to take your shoes off."
