What Marrakech can teach us about interior design

March 24, 2019

Here at The Pink House, our social media scrolling is made up of 50% beautiful interiors and 45% fantasy bucket list travel destinations (the rest is a heady mix of animals sneezing and Gemma Collins memes, but that’s probably just us). With our new series of blog posts we decided to combine the two, casting a shrewd interiors eye over our favourite travel destinations to pinch the bits we love best.

First up, it’s Instagram favourite Marrakech. Morocco’s almost-too-buzzing capital mixes traditional patterns and materials with an emerging modern graphic style. Here’s the bits we’ll be stealing for our own homes.

Kaleidoscope tiles

As the old saying goes: stay in Marrakech, become physically attracted to tiling. Beautiful geometric tiles are a feature of many Islamic countries, but Marrakech has a selection that would make your local Topps Tiles seller weep with envy.

The Ben Youssef Madrasa and Le Jardin Secret are the ultimate examples of tiles to make you regret your bathroom choices (in a good way).

Don’t have millions of pounds and centuries of time to spare? NOMAD restaurant has an eminently imitable monochrome tile scheme across its tables and bars *immediately saves to Pinterest*.

Bold colours

Marrakech and The Pink House have lots in common – we’re stylish, love rugs, and could reasonably be described as ‘loud’, but it’s our mutual affection for a bold colour scheme that really makes us BFFs.

The pin-up building of bold colours is Le Jardin Majorelle, the uber-collab between painter Jacques Majorelle and fashion designer Yves Saint Laurent. And, in case you’re wondering, Pantone’s Dazzling Blue is a pretty good colour match for Majorelle Blue.

Le Jardin restaurant (there’s a lorra jardins in Marrakech!) has found a colour scheme that works (green), and has stuck with it; something The Pink House heartily approves of…

Soft furnishings

We spent most of our time in Marrakech hoping someone would play the carpet scam on us so we’d just have to spend hundreds of pounds on a Beni Ourain. Alas, no such luck, but we did come away with a whole heap of soft furnishings inspiration.

Traditional Moroccan patterns are having a real moment right now, and there are plenty of colourful options to go for, as well as the ubiquitous monochrome styles. You can purchase from The Anou – an online platform for local artisans – if going to Marrakech just to buy a rug seems a tad too extravagant.

Although, with round-trip flights from London to Marrakech costing under £200 (check out Easyjet and British Airways - and Ryanair if you must), perhaps heading to Morocco for your home decor requirements is a cost-saving move after all. That’s what the Pink House Husband was told anyway…

"Fabulous family living!"

Emily Murray founder of The Pink House Living

"Hello! I’m Emily Murray, founder and editor of The Pink House. I’m a lifestyle journalist who has written and edited for loads of different publications, including Stylist, The Guardian, Grazia, Cosmopolitan, Conde Nast Traveller, Brides, and Mother & Baby. Here I am in the bricks-and-mortar Pink House in South East London, where I live with the Pink House Husband (PHH) and our two small, semi-feral boys. Our fabulous Christopher Farr sofa is covered in marker pen and chocolate, and the Eames rocker has a few suspicious stains. Come in and make yourself at home. No need to take your shoes off."
